Covertcoat

covertcoat

Covertcoat is a 0-4-0ST 'Quarry Hunslet' built in 1898 by the Hunslet Engineering Company of Leeds as No. 679 and is named after the racehorse which won the Grand National in 1913 (she was previously named 'The Second' as she was the second of a batch of locomotives). She worked in the Welsh Slate Quarries at Dinorwic before being sold to enthusiast John Butler, who kept her for 20 years before sale to the Launceston Steam Railway in 1984. Her cab is a replica of the type fitted to some of the 'Quarry Hunslets', while her tender was constructed at the railway to allow footplate crew more room to move about.

Over the winter of 2006/7, a new boiler and saddle tank were manufactured for Covertcoat. For more information see here.

Dorothea

Dorothea

Dorothea is a 0-4-0ST 'Quarry Hunslet' built by the Hunslet Engineering Company as No. 763 in 1901. Her working life was spent at the Dorothea Slate Quarry in North Wales, where she worked until around 1938. After being abandoned for 30 years in a collapsed shed she was rescued by enthusiast Dave Walker in 1968. She was moved to Launceston as a pile of components in the 1980s and bought by Kay Bowman in 1989. The restoration of Dorothea was considered impossible by many experts (including Kay's husband), however, an award winning restoration was completed of Dorothea by Kay in 2001, although using Covertcoat's boiler and saddle tank. She will enter full time passenger service when her full restoration is complete.

The Electric Dilly

The Electric Dilly

This is a lightweight inspection trolley running on batteries. The wheels were once used on a brick kiln trolley, whilst the motor is an old dynamo from a boat engine. Control is achieved by controlling armature and field current, full speed is given by field weakening. The shunt-wound motor runs on 28 volts provided by nickel-iron accumulators. It's maximum speed is 18mph.

No. 2 - The Dilly

The Dilly

This is a slightly more heavy duty inspection trolly, constructed on the chassis of a Baguley open carriage (ex. Alton Towers) in 2004. Originally the dilly was powered by a generator, but a Kubota engine was delivered and fitted in Autumn 2004. The dilly is built so it can provide a power source for use on the railway away from mains power - this enables welding and other maintenance tasks to be achieved more easily than before.
